Special Places – Calder Vale Hotel

There are some unique places here in Yorkshire, and this hotel, which is not a hotel, is indeed a kind of special.

Disguised as a regular pub, the Calder Vale hosts the Luddite brewery – that’s where Ian, Gary, and Tim work their magic, and their beers are nothing like you have ever had. Not kidding, you should try them (all of them, but if you really have to pick one, go for the chocolate-orange – my favorite).

The building keeps the atmosphere and charm of its early days; we are talking about 1874! Exactly 100 years before we were born.

It’s known that photographers are attracted by light, and here the light on the stairs going to the first floor is unique: every time we walk those stairs, we can’t resist the view – it’s hard to explain.

The best reason to go to the first floor is to watch the live comedy shows or a concert that the guys organize regularly. Not surprisingly, getting a seat requires a bit of luck and a lot of planning: get stuck at the beer tap on the ground floor, and sure like hell you’ll be missing the show.

Beer, pie, concert or comedy: it does not really matter – when in doubt, just grab a Luddite Chocolate-Orange and the world will be a better place!
